CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Thorus & Zahra

Why hadn’t I recognized it the first time I tried draining her? If it weren’t for Mahla, I wouldn’t have known my father’s ring was around the girl’s neck all this time. There I was, searching for a way to transform myself into a fire starter, and the answer had been right in front of me the whole time. But why didn’t I sense it, and how should one go about using this ring to absorb the power of a burner? I had to find the book. That woman placed it somewhere, but where?

So many questions ran through my head and I struggled to find the answers. My body was weakening. Nehemie was right; it would only be a matter of time before my wretchedness met its end. Still, this ring could save me from my endless desires. That much I knew.

My father tried hiding it from me before he went into seclusion. Only, the old fool was quite surprised by what I had in store for him. Yet while he slept, I could feel him close, haunting me.

I walked around the forest, glancing over my shoulder and into the dark. With every step I took, I could feel someone there, watching me. Her presence had been in the distance for two days now.

The dizziness returned suddenly and I had to stop and rest my body against a tree, and then the sound of something or someone stepping on a broken branch alerted me.

I spun around and found a pair of silver eyes I had done my best to avoid ever since I’d started hunting down fire starters.

“You’ve cost me quite a lot of trouble in finding you, Thorus?” Her voice made the ground tremble in fear. Only one woman could have such an impact.

“Zahra,” I said under my breath. Her long red hair was still as frightening against the wind. I was intrigued by her beauty, but let out a laugh instead to anger her.

“How could a guardian of Ledron leave her kingdom with its leader still in deep slumber?” I mocked, knowing very well why Sorvos was asleep for longer than usual.

Her face twisted at my viciousness. “So many lives destroyed at your hands and yet you have no remorse.” She cursed me through gritted teeth, “May the Gods blast you into oblivion.”

Zahra reached over her shoulder and pulled out her long, bronze spear that had brought her many victories in battles long ago. She aimed the fierce weapon and flames sprung out at me. I managed to avoid getting struck without using my power. Not even a guardian as experienced as her would be a match for me, even if I were weakened. Though, I had to be careful.

Zahra continued firing flames until finally, I pointed the ring in defense. The blood red stone didn’t disappoint me; it burned intensely, engulfing the dark forest in light and stopping Zahra’s flames from penetrating me.

I commanded it to reverse at the guardian but the ring resisted, letting the flames dissipate.
